On a trip to Arizona in '97, I visited a lot of museums and was inspired by the beautiful, highly symbolic Hopi kachina dolls. I planned & sketched a whole series of animals based on these figures, but I never got around to completing them (though I still hope to do so) - but when I was looking for something to color for practice, I stumbled across this sketch. Tawa is the Sun Kachina, and his face seemed somewhat feline to me, so I made him a cougar.
